Written in mid-2007:

Oh, Stuart Holden. Why did you have to hurt your ankle? Now what must be one of the hardest records to break will stand for another year: the number of appearances made without starting a match. In 2003, Jamil Walker of the San Jose Earthquakes made 19 appearances in the regular season, all coming off the bench. Two weeks ago, Houston's Corey Ashe had made 14 sub appearances without a start. But thanks to Holden's injury, he's gotten the chance to start the last two games for the Dynamo. Oh drat.

Several other players are likely to make the top ten after this season, though. The top contenders:

CHV Matt Taylor 11
NY Sinisa Ubiparipovic 11
RSL Jamie Watson 8
DC Domenic Mediate 7
COL Omar Cummings 5
NY Mike Magee 5

Unfortunately for him, Ubiparipovic could've had a shot if not for the return of Magee, as well as the signing of Francis Doe. Too late now. Only 12 men have made as many as 8 appearances without starting in an MLS season, so that's the number to reach. Taylor is a lock to make it as he was cut mid-season.

With both Olsen and Fred out for DC's game against Chicago, it's pretty certain that Mediate will get his first start of the year.
