New Milestones Upcoming for MLS

No, this isn't about David Beckham.

Goal #6,000 in MLS history is approaching very fast, and apparently without notice. Two years ago, it was Andy Williams who scored the 5,000th goal in MLS history. I had blogged about it a few times before in the early days of this blog, and I even sent an email to MLSnet asking them if they realized it was coming up. A week before it happened they had an article on their site about it, and I wonder if they would've known if not for my posting here and on Bigsoccer? I'd hope so. They (and Elias, I guess) seem to be better at this sort of thing now. The coverage of Houston's streak has been pretty good.

Anyway, we're currently at 5,994 regular season goals:

Games Goals GPG
1996 160 539 3.37
1997 160 522 3.26
1998 192 685 3.57
1999 192 549 2.86
2000 192 612 3.19
2001 158 519 3.28
2002 140 421 3.01
2003 150 433 2.89
2004 150 392 2.61
2005 192 551 2.87
2006 192 503 2.62
2007 103 268 2.60

Overall 1981 5994 3.03

There are four games this Sunday, so we should see the milestone reached then.

Milestone Goals

1,000 Thomas Dooley 9/14/1997 CLB vs KC
2,000 Alex Bunbury 7/3/1999 KC @ TB
3,000 Sasha Victorine 5/9/2001 LA @ TB
4,000 Mark Chung 6/25/2003 COL vs LA
5,000 Andy Williams 8/6/2005 RSL vs CHV
6,000 ??? ??? ???

Did you notice something else in that goal chart? That's right, MLS is about to have it's 2,000th regular season game as well. We're only 19 games away, and assuming no changes to the schedule, the milestone game will be held on August 12. That's a Sunday, and it's also when the Los Angeles Galaxy visit the New England Revolution. So there you go.

Milestone Games

500 9/19/1998 COL vs CLB
1,000 7/18/2001 MIA vs CHI
1,500 4/2/2005 SJ vs NE
2,000 ??? ???
