Download the MLS Lineup Database (1996-2010)

Download here (multiupload.com - choose any of the options to get it)

Updated through the 2010 season. Contains lineups for all competitive matches involving MLS teams, as well as the number of starts, subs, and goals for each player. There's also overall records for each team and coach in league history, as well as rankings of the top teams.

There's one spreadsheet for each team, and several more for overall stats. Please leave any questions/comments here or email them to me. I'd also like to hear about any errors. Well, enjoy.

EDIT: Small error: For LA's goal on 2010-05-05, Alan Gordon scored in the 21st minute, not the 2nd. The one was cut off.

Expansion Draft 2010 Protected Lists Out

So much for doing a final preview. I've spent the past hour updating the Wikipedia article, since MLS only includes the unprotected players in their news articles. I've included all the protected players as well as exempt, so check it out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_MLS_Expansion_Draft

Also, it's nice to see so many teams making smart trades before the draft. Today's Rapids trade is especially smart - getting rid of international players so you can protect more Americans. Has any team made more smart trades in a single year than Colorado?

Missing Out (Post 2010 Update)

What follows is a list of the men who have played the most games in the MLS regular season without playing in an MLS Cup, updated through the 2010 season.

With Jeff Cunningham relinquishing the top spot this past weekend, Jason Kreis returns to the top of the list. Pablo Mastroeni also played in the MLS Cup and is out of the top five.

#1 ranking history:

Start End
Mark Chung ??? 2006-07-04
Jason Kreis 2006-07-04 2009-08-01
Jeff Cunningham 2009-08-01 2010-11-21
Jason Kreis 2010-11-21 ???

Active MLS players in bold.

Next to the number of games played is the rank on this list after previous seasons. An "N/A" means that player wasn't in the top 25 for that year.

In addition to the two that fell off, we have six newcomers to the top 25. Quaranta was a part of the 2004 DC United championship team, but did not play in the final. Thomas could've also played for KC in that game, but didn't. Lewis has also sat the bench for the final.

Falling off the list are last year's 22-25: Richard Farrer, Ted Eck, Jorge Rodriguez, and Mark Santel. All Dallas Burn players.

It looks like Pause is the only hope for a new number one, but even if he plays every game, he's still not going to do it until 2014 at the earliest. It seems that Kreis will reign once again for quite some top into the future.

Who else could make the top 25 in the coming years?

Rapids 10th Best MLS Champions

I can't say that they're deserving champions (no team that finishes 7th can be, IMO). But they certainly don't belong in the same category as last year's RSL team. In fact, they rank as the third best champions of the past seven years:

2010 Generation Adidas Graduates Announced

Wow, they actually decided to announce them ahead of time for once. The last few years, they've released the information at the same time the expansion draft protected lists come out. I will be posting my final expansion draft predictions over the weekend.

I've updated my Graduating from GA post with this year's info, so it's easy to see how 2010's first and second year players compared in terms of minutes to previous GA players.

Thoughts on the graduates:

This continues the trend of third players graduating more easily, following Igwe & Wallace last season. Avila/Guarda/Myers/Nimo/O'Brien probably wouldn't have graduated a couple years ago. Nimo hasn't even played.

No first year players graduated. I thought Tchani might, but he's the only one with a good case. He's just behind Bobby Convey for the most minutes for a first year GA field player without graduating (1614 vs 1610), and his percentage of minutes played is the highest (60%). In addition, he started over 17 games and played in 27. I think he probably should've graduated.

However, I am shocked to see Danny Cruz stay GA for another year. His 1,362 minutes are the most ever for a 2nd year GA player who didn't graduate.

Juan Pablo Angel - Best Ever Age 34 Goal Haul

I've updated the Top Goalscorers by Season Age post to include 2010. That's the page where I look at the top 10 single season goalscorers for each age, based on the age each player is on July 1st of that year (basically the mid-point).

This year, we have one new leader: Juan Pablo Angel's 13 goals were the most ever for an age 34 season, replacing Preki's 12 goals in 1997 for first place. Angel already shares the top spot for age 31 based on his 2007 exploits, and he's 4th for age 32 and 2nd for age 33. I'm sure New York won't miss him at all.

The only other players to be first in more than one age are Roy Lassiter (27, 29, 30) and Preki (33, 38, 39, 40, 42).

The following players all entered the top ten for their age:

17-McInerney/Najar, 18-Mwanga, 19-Bowen, 20-Bunbury/Shea, 22-Montero/Zakuani, 25-Kamara, 26-Le Toux/Wondolowski, 27-Cummings, 28-Casey, 29-Buddle, 32-De Rosario, 33-Cunningham, 34-Angel, 35-Nkufo, 37-Barros Schelotto, 38-McBride.

Cunningham, Mastroeni: Missing Out No Longer

Currently, Jeff Cunningham is the all-time record holder for most MLS regular season games played without playing in an MLS Cup (top 25 after 2009 here). He passed Jason Kreis to claim that record on August 1, 2009. It looks like he'll give the record back to Kreis in a few days.

However, despite finally being part of an MLS Cup team, he still could miss his chance to play depending on how Schellas Hyndman pulls the strings. He wasn't in the lineup in the magnificent 3-0 win over the Galaxy. Wouldn't it be cruel for him to not get off the bench?

Meanwhile, Pablo Mastroeni has now moved up to third, passing former Rapids teammate Mark Chung. There's quite a few former Burn and Rapids players in the top 25, as you can imagine. Mastro is a lock to be in the lineup on Sunday.

Watching these two longtime MLS stalwarts getting their chance in the big game must be making Logan Pause sweat - with the retirement of Brian McBride, he'll be far and away the active leader if Cunningham/Mastroeni both play.

MLS manipulates Best XI to include Donovan

Soccer Insider
Donovan was on the ballot as a forward. According to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, the league felt Donovan belonged on the Best XI, so after the votes were counted, the league placed him on the final list as a midfielder. It's unclear who was bumped off (the player who received the fifth-most votes among midfielders).

Garber: "Due to the large number of votes that he received, and the fact that he was on the Galaxy lineup as a midfielder nearly twice as many times as he was a forward, he was included as a midfielder [on the Best XI]. We needed to do the right thing."

They are opening up a huge can of worms here. How can we ever trust any of the awards announcements again? In 2007, Cuauhtemoc Blanco was nominated for MVP yet didn't make the Best XI in a similar situation (he was listed as a forward, along with Angel and Emilio). They didn't feel the need to change things then.

MLS need to reform the voting process, allowing for a flexible formation depending on how the votes come in. That way, this situation won't happen again. Besides, nobody uses a 3-5-2 any more. But it's clearly wrong to change things after all the votes are in and you don't like the results.

MLS Goal Details 2010

Taken from the game guide pdfs on MLSsoccer.com. They appear each week, and also in the playoffs. For the non-playoff teams who played each other in the final week (DC-TOR, CHV-CHI), I've added in the stats myself.

As usual for MLS, the final numbers don't quite add up. It always seems to be off by a goal or two when comparing the offense and defensive numbers. It may be possible to go through each week's game guides to figure out the errors and when they occured (or not, since they didn't have the game guides for a while early on this season).

Anyway, on offense there are 88 cross goals, 44 corner, 15 fk, 40 idfk. On defense, it's 87-45-17-38 respectively. The location numbers are different too: 134-373-84 vs 131-375-85.

Total 2207 44 1.99%

Only 98 corners for TFC? That may be the lowest total of all time. I know it's the lowest from 2003-present.

Overall PCT of corners converted is right in line with previous years:

Corners Goals PCT
2003 1502 32 2.13%
2004 1554 26 1.67%
2005 1776 36 2.03%
2006 1751 37 2.11%
2007 1826 42 2.30%
2008 1980 40 2.02%
2009 2168 43 1.98%
2010 2207 44 1.99%

As always, keep in mind that due to the way MLS counts things, there may be more goals scored off corners. Depending on what happens, a goal from a corner kick could end up as a rebound goal or an own goal, and those wouldn't be counted in the "corner goals" category.

What jumps at you from these stats? It's interesting to me that there were more headers this year, yet fewer crosses.
